DESCRIPTION:We investigate the factors that determine the emergence of a d
rug-resistant HIV strain during the course of combination therapy. Using a
within-host model for the dynamics of HIV\, we study conditions under whi
ch mutant variants are selected in the presence of drug pressure and domi
nate the virus population. Local and global stability of resultant equilib
rium points are discussed. An optimal combinational treatment regime that
seeks to maximize the benefits of treatment while minimizing viral loads a
nd side effects of the treatment regimen involved is explored. Preliminary
results suggest that an optimal length of “drug holiday” can be found
\, which makes structured treatment plausible in the administration of ART
 .
