DESCRIPTION:We review the concepts of cooperative communications and netwo
 rking which\nrepresent a major boost to network performance. The emphasis 
 is not on\ntraditional information theoretic methods and diversity utiliza
 tion but\,\nrather\, on "network-level" cooperation benefits that stem fro
 m properties of\nservice systems. In this regard\, the performance index w
 e focus on is stable\nthroughput. We summarize the state of the art and ou
 tline some of our recent\ncontributions.\n
