DESCRIPTION:With the advent of multicores\, there is demand for monitoring
parallel\nprograms for a wide range of applications including those relat
ed to\nimprovement of performance and reliability. Debugging tools such as
\ndata race detection\, tools such as DIFT (dynamic information flow\ntrac
king) for detecting software attacks\, techniques such as\nspeculative par
allelisation that strive to expose parallelism and\nimprove performance\,
are examples of applications that require a\nparallel program to be monito
red during runtime. While each of the\nabove monitoring applications are q
uite different in their purpose and\nimplementation\, they all share a com
mon requirement in the context of\nmonitoring a parallel program -- the ne
ed to detect and react to\ninterprocessor shared memory dependences (ISMDs
).\n\nIn this talk\, we propose a simple architectural extension in the fo
rm\nof ECMon: support for exposing cache events to the software\, in\neffe
ct\, efficiently exposing the ISMDs to software. We demonstrate how\na wid
e variety of monitoring applications\, including those for\nsecurity attac
k detection\, those that allow speculation past barrier\nsynchronisations\
, and those for ensuring sequential consistency in a\nmachine with a relax
ed memory model\, can be implemented efficiently\nusing this support.\n\nB
