DESCRIPTION:Signy Island is a biodiversity hot spot for lichens and other
organisms in the Antarctic region. Here summer temperatures have increased
over the past 50 years with the W Antarctic having the fastest rate of ch
ange in the S hemisphere. As a consequence of the rapid warming and glacia
l retreat\, new areas are being exposed\, providing opportunities for lich
en colonisation. A recent field trip on Signy Island has provided new lich
en material to complement historical collections\, and to explore how biod
iversity has responded to environmental change.
