DESCRIPTION:The recent advances in sequencing technologies have opened up
new opportunities in the application of genomics to crop breeding. Althoug
h some of the model plant species and crops such as rice have been sequenc
ed and annotated the access to the genomes for some of the most important
crops\, in particular grasses remain challenging. Some of these species ar
e characterised by very large genomes or include features such as paleo/al
loploidy. We will discuss some of these challenges in the context of the s
tudy of crops from the Brassicaceae and Poaceae families with particular e
mphasis on reference-free approaches for the design of maker-assisted sele
 ction
