DESCRIPTION:Since the fall of the Berlin Wall\, peculiar events have trans
pired in German films. Left-wing terrorist Andreas Baader has been resurre
cted as a rock star. Communist East Germany has been preserved for one wom
an in a 79m² apartment. The 1954 soccer World Cup victory has been interp
reted as an innocent rebirth of a nation. Hitler has cried. \n\nThese pres
tige productions have scored at box offices both at home and abroad\, wher
e they count among the most popular German films of all time. Suddenly\, h
owever\, we are a universe away from how we once understood as the country
’s cinematic take on history: the radical style\, content and politics o
f the New German Cinema. This talk theorises the new historiography of uni
 ted Germany's Cinema of Retrospection.
