DESCRIPTION:Data assimilation (DA) has not been used in climate studies an
 ything like to the extent it has in weather prediction. I will discuss whe
 ther this is likely to change and argue that DA has a lot to offer climate
  research\, particularly when cast in a Bayesian framework. Motivating exa
 mples from paleoclimate and ocean studies will be given that will serve to
  outline the major challenges arising in DA when it is used to tackle clim
 ate prpoblems.
