SUMMARY:Fibre Waviness Defects in Composite Materials - Dr Stuart Lemanski
 \, CUED

DESCRIPTION:The anisotropic mechanical properties of fibre reinforced comp
osites are - by definition - dependent upon the orientation of fibres with
in the material. Most calculations assume that fibres in a so-called "unid
irectinal" composite are straight. However even the naked eye can see that
bundles of fibres (tows) are not straight\, but exhibit non-uniform "wavi
ness". This talk will present work in progress to characterise the orienta
tion of fibres in 2 and 3 dimensions\, and to determine the effect of thes
e waviness defects upon material properties\, and compressive strength in
 particular.
