SUMMARY:Recent progress on statistical methods for LHC physics - Dr. Glen
Cowan (Royal Holloway\, University of London)
DTSTART:20101014T150000Z

DESCRIPTION:Making a discovery at the Large Hadron Collider requires one t
o reject the hypothesis that the observed data are consistent with known b
ackground processes\, and in quantifying the significance of a potential s
ignal one must take into account all known uncertainties. The talk will d
escribe recent progress with profile likelihood methods\, which provide a
straightforward framework for carrying out this task. These will be contr
asted with methods widely used at LEP\nand the Tevatron. The machinery fo
r producing combined results of a search\, such as from different decay ch
annels of the Higgs boson\, will also be described.
