SUMMARY:QED is not imperiled by the proton's running radii - Prof. Alvaro
 De Rujula (CERN)

DESCRIPTION:The moments of the proton's charge distribution\, such as its
mean-square radius\, can be measured in various ways. Recent results based
on the Lamb Shift in muonic hydrogen are 5 standard deviations away from
those on ordinary hydrogen and e-p scattering\, compiled by CODATA (the ge
neral-physics equivalent of the Particle-Data Group). This has been interp
reted in diverse manners\, including the demise of QED\, the greatest blow
ever to the Standard Model. I shall remind the audience of some of the at
omic physics one may have forgotten and describe the muonic-hydrogen exper
iment\, as well as the analysis of the rest of the data. For most --perha
ps all-- of the talk\, the audience will be saying "I can't believe it".
