DESCRIPTION:For over two decades\, the Neural Theory of Language (NTL) gr
oup at ICSI/UC\nBerkeley has been developing a unified theory of language
acquisition and\nuse.The methodology involves implementing systems that bo
th perform\nfunctionally and are consistent with experimental findings at
all levels.\n \nThe theory has matured to the point where new challenges m
ost often fit\nexisting structures. The talk will introduce the ECG (Embod
ied Construction Grammar)\nformalism and the related concepts of simulatio
n semantics and best-fit\nanalysis. I will discuss how these mechanisms ac
count for phenomena such as\ncompositionality\, public meaning\, garden pa
thing and grammar learning.\nThe audience will be invited to suggest addit
 ional challenges.\n \n \n\n
