DESCRIPTION:A large number of dynamical properties are known to hold in ea
 ch direction in the Z^d action generated by d commuting maps. I will repor
 t on joint work with Richard Miles concerned with understanding whether th
 ere are uniformities in these phenomena as the direction changes. A genera
 l picture emerges showing that even in the simplest (or most hyperbolic) s
 ituations one is almost inevitably forced to deal with subtle Diophantine 
 questions to establish this uniformity.
