DESCRIPTION:Vivek Jain asked whether\, given a group G and a core-free sub
 group H\, it is always possible to find \na transversal for H in G which g
 enerates G.\nThe answer is affirmative\, using a theorem of Julius Whiston
  on independent sets in the symmetric group.\n\nI will discuss the proof a
 nd some slight extensions\, \nand will also talk abouta parameter of a gro
 up \nconjecturally related to the maximum size of an\nindependent set\; th
 is involves an open question about the subgroup lattices of finite groups.
