DESCRIPTION:This talk will be about a joint work with Javier Cilleruelo an
 d Imre Z. Ruzsa.\n\nWe give asymptotically sharp estimates for the cardina
 lity of a set of residue classes with the property that the representation
  function is bounded by a prescribed number.\n\nWe then use this to obtain
  an analogous result for sets of integers\, answering an old question of S
 imon Sidon.\n\nWe will describe the tools that are needed and show the equ
 ivalence of this problem with a problem from analysis proposed by Schinzel
  and Schmidt.\n\nThe talk will be accessible to a wide audience\; we will 
 avoid the technicalities.
