DESCRIPTION:The study of human personality is flourishing. One area of par
ticularly rapid growth has been the exploration of how personality differe
nces are consequential for health and well-being. I will explore the root
s of this research and the routes it has taken. I will then ensnare\, cap
ture and poke some of the tacit assumptions underlying basic and applied a
spects of this research agenda. The problems detected and solutions offere
d will deal with the insufficiency of trait explanations of well-being and
the importance of exploring people’s personal projects in order to unde
rstand and influence the shape of their lives. I conclude with the propos
ition that couples\, families and organizations might consider crafting a
symbolic “Free Trait Agreement” through which the quality of lives may
  be enhanced.
