DESCRIPTION:This talk addresses the issues for parents around reading thei
r baby’s signals and cues from birth\, which is one of the important com
ponents of parental interactive competence. Understanding infant cues has
been shown to boost maternal self-confidence and increase maternal sensit
ivity. Sensitive and contingent interactions between mothers and their in
fants have been related to better social and cognitive competence and the
formation of secure attachment in infants. The Brazelton Centre’s goal
is to promote healthy parent-infant relationships through an understanding
of newborn behaviour\, and it runs courses for both practitioners and re
searchers in the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) and the Newbo
rn Behavioral Observations System (NBO). They are based on the concept th
at infant behaviour comprises of four organized systems of behaviour produ
cing a profile of the newborn in the first three months of life. These sy
stems along with the self-regularity abilities of newborns will be describ
ed\, as well as current projects and research studies in the UK using the
 NBAS.\n
