DESCRIPTION:Structural colours are well known in the animal kingdom\, wher
e they are responsible for striking colours such as a peacock's elaborate
tail\, the iridescent wing casings of a scarab beetle\, and the vivid blu
e wings of a Morpho butterfly. However\, structural colour in the plant ki
ngdom has rarely been studied and is poorly understood. While it was origi
nally thought to be a rare occurence in plants\, we have so far identified
structural colour in about half of the orders of flowering plants. Using
a combination of optical analyses\, molecular biology\, phylogenetics and
insect vision experiments\, we will shed light on the evolution of structu
 ral colour in plants.
