DESCRIPTION:X-ray spectra and variability of accreting black holes show si
 gnatures of matter just a few gravitational radii from the event horizon. 
 The spectral signatures\, particularly a broad iron emission line\, will b
 e discussed and illustrated with data from objects of mass ranging from 10
  to 10 million Solar masses. Variability\, including reverberation of the 
 X-ray emission from the accretion flow\, will be presented.
