DESCRIPTION:It is an almost magic toolbox\, which has been created around
quantum gas experiments. This toolbox includes bosons\, fermions\, weak an
 d strong interactions\, low-dimensional systems\, optical lattices and mor
 e. Yet\, the observed physics has been governed by short ranged interactio
ns between the particles. In this talk\, I will report on an experiment in
which we have succeeded in creating a quantum gas with infinitely long-ra
nged interactions. The interactions are mediated by an optical cavity. We
 observe a phase transition from a superfluid into a self-organized state w
ith a broken spatial symmetry\, which can be regarded as a supersolid phas
 e. This observation is a realization of the Dicke quantum phase transition
which has been predicted more than 30 years ago\, but has never been real
 ized in an experiment. \n
