SUMMARY:Thorium Fuelled Accelerator Driven Subcritical Reactors: The Futur
 e of Nuclear Power? - Dr G.T. Parks\, CUED

DESCRIPTION:"Current nuclear reactors use uranium and plutonium created fr
om uranium as their fuel. Although the technology demonstrably works\, it
is\nnot without its downsides: concerns about safety\, nuclear proliferati
on and\nthe nature of the waste produced. This talk will explore an altern
ative\nnuclear technology that uses thorium rather than uranium and discus
s its\nadvantages and its challenges. "\n\nGeoff Parks received his BA in
Engineering from Cambridge University in 1984 and his PhD in Nuclear Engin
eering in 1989. He became a University Lecturer at the start of 1996 and
is now a Senior Lecturer. His main research interests lie in the applicati
on of advanced optimisation methods in the development and application of
multiobjective optimisation methods. He also has interests in the analysis
and design of nuclear reactor systems\, and in particular at present thor
 ium-fueled accelerator-driven subcritical systems.
