DESCRIPTION:Amartya Sen’s capability approach was originally developed a
s an alternative to resourced-based approaches to the evaluation of advant
age. The approach draws on the works of Aristotle and John Rawls and has
achieved growing momentum as well as sparking debate in many disciplines a
ssociated with human development. Key thinkers\, including philosopher Ma
rtha Nussbaum\, have taken Sen’s ideas forward in diverse and controvers
ial ways. The capability approach offers unique insights into the challen
ges of evaluating human development\, ideas of justice and the assumptions
which inform the kinds of equalities and freedoms towards which societies
are striving.\n\nThe purpose of this initial meeting is to invite individ
uals who are interested in the capability approach to come together to dis
cuss how an interest group on capabilities can facilitate understanding an
d applications of this approach to human development. The group is potent
ially of interest to those working in the fields of human development\, so
cial justice\, transformative education\, political participation and pove
rty reduction. The group will be based in the Faculty of Education at the
University of Cambridge but welcomes those from disciplines and faculties
beyond education.\n\nOne strand of the group’s activities may include a
reading group to discuss key works on the capability approach in the cont
ext of participants’ own research agendas. Another strand may concentra
te on developing new research proposals drawing on the capability approach
. We also hope to host some seminars involving key thinkers in the field
as well as offering the opportunity for group members to present their own
work and ideas in relation to the capability approach. \n\nFor further i
nformation please contact Caroline Hart\, email: cfsscr2@cam.ac.uk.\nALL W
