DESCRIPTION:The spin-boson model\, describing a two-state system coupled t
o a bath of harmonic oscillators\, serves as a paradigmatic example for qu
antum dissipative systems. Notable effects are the non-Markovian character
of spin dynamics and the existence of a quantum phase transition at stron
ger dissipation. The talk will discuss selected aspects of the spin-boson
model\, including the controversy about the nature of the sub-ohmic quantu
m phase transition and its resolution. The basis of our investigation is a
recently developed numerical approach\, which extends the application ran
ge of exact diagonalization techniques to open quantum systems with contin
 uous bath degrees of freedom.
