DESCRIPTION:This talk will start with an introduction to the field of spin
tronics\, which aims to control electronic devices using the spin of the e
lectron rather than the charge. The emphasis will be on ferromagnetic meta
l / semiconductor hybrid systems\, including the resistance mismatch probl
em and results on all-electrical devices.\n\nIn detail\, the talk will cov
er research carried out on the injection of spin polarized current into se
miconductor p-i-n LEDs from iron and magnetite thin films. Measuring the p
olarization of the light emitted from the LED we can determine the polariz
ation of the electrons across the semiconductor / metal interface. From ir
on films a polarization of 4.5 % has been measured and from magnetite 1.6
%. Reasons for the small size of the observed polarizations will be discus
 sed.
