SUMMARY:The Physics of Wind Turbine Placement - Tim French\, Technical Man
 ager\, RES Group

DESCRIPTION:Global warming has become the most prominent environmental iss
ue of our times. Growing public awareness of the effects of ‘climate cha
nge’ already affecting the world around us is being driven through incre
asing global temperatures along with greater frequency and intensity of na
tural events such as floods\, droughts and heat waves. . From the UK Stern
Review in 2006 to the latest reports from the UN’s Intergovernmental Pa
nel on Climate Change (IPCC)\, stark warnings are coming from scientific a
nd economic experts that climate change is a reality and that the conseque
nces to our society will be significant. \nMaking greater use of wind and
solar power\, geothermal energy\, biomass and marine technologies such as
tidal and wave power\, represents one of our best strategies for meeting t
he climate change challenge\, whilst also helping to secure the availabili
ty and security of future energy supplies. \nWind power is currently the m
ost advanced renewable technology and has developed enormously over the pa
st twenty years. In this talk Tim French (RES) will cover how the applicat
ion of flow models\, wake simulations\, computational fluid dynamics and a
ccurate energy yield predictions\, in addition to addressing issues such a
s overcoming the radar impact from turbines\, are all instrumental in iden
tifying viable sites. \n\nThere will be a wine reception after the talk wi
 th the guest speaker.\n\nFree for members\, £2 for non-members.
