 10\n\n19:00 - 21:00\n\nLocation: CRASSH\, 17 Mill Lane\, Cambridge\n\n \n
\nThe use of digital and online technologies by dissidents across the Midd
le East to articulate views excluded by government controlled-media\, and
to mobilise protests against repressive states has gathered pace in recent
years. Western media and governments have celebrated the power of social
media as a means to advance democracy by opening space for political debat
e and connecting activists.\n\nOur panellists will look critically at this
assumption\, drawing on the experiences of Palestinian\, Iranian and Egyp
tian digital activism.\n\nThis is a Cambridge Festival of Ideas event\, op
en to all\, free of charge. Questions and debate on the issues raised will
be encouraged. If you would like to attend\, please email Ankita Sahay (a
 s2141@cam.ac.uk) to register.\n\n Speakers\n\nMehri Honarbin-Holliday (Can
terbury Christchurch University and author of Becoming Visible in Iran: Wo
men in Contemporary Iranian Society)\n\nMasih Alinejad (Iranian blogger an
d activist)\n\nMiriyam Aouragh (Oxford Internet Institute\, University of
 Oxford) Podcast/Skype presentation\n\nAnne Alexander (CRASSH\, University
