DESCRIPTION:Rapid advances in key computing technologies are making the de
 velopment of socially and emotionally adept technologies possible\, and he
 ightened expectation of computer users are making them necessary.  This ta
 lk will describe recent work in the Computer Laboratory investigating the 
 inference of people's mental states from facial expressions\, vocal nuance
 s\, body posture and gesture\, and other physiological signals\, and also 
 consider the expression of emotions by robots and cartoon avatars.
