DESCRIPTION:One of the most fundamental issues in biology is the nature of
evolutionary transitions from single cell organisms to multicellular ones
. Not surprisingly for microscopic life in a fluid environment\, many of t
he processes involved are related to transport and locomotion\, for effici
ent exchange of chemical species with the environment is one of the most b
asic features of life. In this talk I will describe recent experimental
and theoretical work from my group on these issues that has highlighted s
ome fundamental open problems in the nonequilibrium physics of self-organi
 zation.
