DESCRIPTION:Can we fly without costing the earth? Trends show that more pe
ople are flying more\, and for this to be sustainable\, the aerospace indu
stry must develop cleaner\, quieter planes. In this talk\, I will show th
at this challenge rests firmly on the shoulders of the materials science a
nd engineering community. In order to deliver more efficient aircraft\, cu
rrent alloys must be optimised and new materials systems must be developed
. In response\, materials scientists\, physicists and engineers need to de
velop a deep understanding of many of the complex interactions that occur
in commercial alloys. This talk will show how the scientific community is
responding to this challenge.\n\nJohn Aveson is currently based in the Rol
ls-Royce University Technology Centre in the Department of Materials Scien
ce & Metallurgy. His research focuses on the processing of both convention
al and novel materials for aerospace. He graduated in 2009 with an MEng in
Materials Science from the University of Oxford.
