DESCRIPTION:Since more than 40 years the Austrian Archaeological Institute
is\ndigging in Tell el-Dab'a in the eastern Nile Delta. The place could b
e\nidentified with ancient Avaris\, the capital of the Hyksos\, a dynasty
of\nforeign rulers over Egypt in the end of the Second Intermediate Period
\n(1650-1540BC). Coming from the region of the Levant\, Syria and Palestin
e\nthese foreign rulers always remained as a trauma in the Egyptian memory
but\npresented however a unique combination of foreign traditions assimil
ated to\nthe Egyptian culture. My research is focused on the residential a
rea F/I\n(local labelling). In addition to temples\, palaces\, cemeteries
and the big\nharbours of the city this quarter presents a development of a
round 150\nyears and a gradual improvement of the living standards which c
an possibly\nbe paralleled with the rise of this foreign population leadin
g to their\ntakeover of power. Apart from political implications this quar
ter delivers\ninsight in the everyday life of one of the largest cities of
this period.\nIn collecting all the different information concerning the
analysis of the\nbones\, plant remains\, pottery and small finds and combi
ning them with the\narchitecture I try to reconstruct a close picture of t
he ancient living\nconditions and contribute another comprehensive study t
 o Egyptian\nsettlement archaeology.
