SUMMARY:Plastic Fantastic: Organic Solar Cells as a Large-Scale Renewable
 Energy Source - Mark Wilson

DESCRIPTION:Over the past two decades organic (i.e. carbon-based) semicond
uctors have gone from a laboratory curiosity to the dominant technology fo
r high-end smartphone displays. More recent research has studied their sui
tability as photovoltaic cells\, exploiting the exquisite molecular contro
l granted by organic chemical synthesis\, and the large-scale fabrication
made possible by solution-processable polymers. I will try to give an over
view of the field\, and explain the role of my work\, which uses ultrafast
transient absorption spectroscopy to study materials that can make better
use of\nhigher-energy (i.e. blue) light by generating multiple electrons
 for every absorbed photon.
