DESCRIPTION:Viruses are of great medical\, veterinary\, and agricultural i
nterest. An enormous amount of data has amassed on viruses\, which also of
fers great opportunities to employ viruses as model organisms\, for exampl
e\, to help understand evolutionary processes. Specifically\, I will descr
ibe how my colleagues and I are using viral datasets for:\n* virus identif
ication\;\n* comparison of evolutionary pressures in possibly divergent vi
ruses\;\n* tracking population dynamics of viruses over time\;\n* characte
risation of antigenic properties of viruses\;\n* host-virus relationships.
\n\nMy goal is to introduce the audience to the diversity of viral dataset
s\, and the potential for employing sophisticated statistical and computat
 ional approaches.
