DESCRIPTION:I will present our recent experiments with binary hyperfine-st
ate mixtures of Rb-87 in a three-dimensional optical lattice with state de
pendence along one axis. We have studied how the transition of one\ncompon
ent from superfluid to Mott-insulator is affected by the presence and the
properties of a second\, tunable 'background' component. We interpret our
findings in terms of a polaron-like dressing and the\nformation of a quant
um emulsion. Further\, I will discuss our observation of four-wave mixing
of macroscopically populated two-component matter\nwaves in a collinear ge
ometry. With its particular combination of internal and external states\,
this system lends itself to possible applications in the context of quantu
 m atom optics. Finally\, I will talk\nabout our most recent work\, matter-
wave scattering from a dilute atomic crystal.
