SUMMARY:Secondary Health Benefits of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptat
ion - Prof Douglas Crawford-Brown\, 4CMR\, University of Cambridge

DESCRIPTION:Measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions can also bring abo
ut\nreductions in emissions of particulates\, nitrogen oxides and sulfur\n
oxides. These latter reductions bring improvements in public health in\nre
gard to morbidity and mortality. These "secondary benefits" are\nsignifica
nt in and of themselves\, but they also bring a decline in\nhealth care co
sts and a rise in GDP. As a result\, climate change\nmitigation measures i
n the developing world\, especially in mega\ncities\, are increasingly jus
tified by linking them to public health\nmeasures that might be required e
ven in the absence of risks from\nclimate change.\n\n\nThis talk is part o
 f a one-day conference: Climate Change and Health\, see www.cambridgeclima

 oor)\n
