 nWe present an automatic approach to determining\nwhether a pronoun in tex
 t refers to\na preceding noun phrase or is instead nonreferential.\nWe ext
 ract the surrounding textual\ncontext of the pronoun and gather\, from\na 
 large corpus\, the distribution of words that\noccur within that context. 
 We learn to reliably\nclassify these distributions as representing either\
 nreferential or non-referential pronoun instances.\nDespite its simplicity
 \, experimental\nresults on classifying the English pronoun _It_\nshow the
  system achieves the highest performance\nyet attained on this important t
 ask.
