DESCRIPTION:Today's children achieve literacy in the context of a complex\
 , multimodal world.  But reading is also a grounded\, physical activity\, 
 and they must come to terms with their own world as part of understanding 
 the universes created by other minds.  This talk will present consideratio
 ns of literacy as it has changed - and not changed - over the past fifty y
 ears\, drawing on the example of a single reader and her elaborate textual
  world.
