DESCRIPTION:The relationship between gene mutations and disease is a compl
ex one. As we acquire more information it is becoming increasingly difficu
lt for individual biologists to maintain an overview of the structure and
function of the systems they work on. To overcome this there is a need for
computational models that can aid the bench scientist both in the design
of experiments and understanding how well current knowledge describes the
system at hand. As a first step towards this we have constructed models of
molecular systems that play a part in Type II diabetes and mitochondrial
function. I will present an overview of these models including an analysis
of the evolution of the core biochemical processes leading from glucose b
reakdown to ATP production in pancreatic β-cells.
