DESCRIPTION:Killer whales are a cosmopolitan species found in all the worl
ds oceans. Although currently considered a single species they are polymor
phic\, with sympatric ecologically disparate forms being found in the Paci
fic\, Atlantic and Antarctic. Here\, I report on findings from a three yea
r study using genetic and stable isotope analyses to characterise North At
lantic killer whale ecotypes. Additionally I will discuss how sequencing c
omplete mitochondrial genomes of a global killer whale database has greatl
y improved phylogenetic resolution of the relationship between each ecotyp
e\, including those from the Antarctic. Lastly I will discuss the promisin
g work using ancient DNA analyses of subfossil samples to look at past dem
ographic change during periods of climactic change to forecast future resp
onses of this species to ongoing climate change.
