DESCRIPTION:A key issue in the study of speech prosody is to understand th
e\ndimensions along which languages differ and the factors which are\nresp
onsible for such differentiation. This paper will deal with one\naspect of
  cross-language differentiation\, pitch range\, which has\nlargely escaped
detailed attention to date. It will present findings of\na systematic com
parison of a number of measures of pitch range in\nspeakers of English and
German\, as well as a perceptual study to\nexamine which measures correla
te most with listener judgements of\nlanguage membership. In this paper I
will also discuss preliminary\nfindings on the implementation of such cros
s-language differences\nby second language learners and its consequences f
 or perceptions of\nforeign accent.
