DESCRIPTION:My current study examines patterns exhibited in the ways Czech
and Hungarian\nadvanced learners of English organise temporal information
in discourse. Previous\nresearch on reference to time has shown that (a)
in L1 discourse there are clearly\ndistinct language-specific processes wh
en establishing and maintaining temporal\ncoherence and (b) L2 discourse l
argely reflects principles of information organisation\ntypical of the spe
aker's mother tongue. These claims have been supported by\nexperiments foc
using on a variety of discourse dimensions\, namely topic time\nmanagement
(cf. Carroll & von Stutterheim 2003)\; regulation of granularity and\ncon
densation levels (cf. Noyau et al. 2005)\; as well as selecting event pers
pectivation\nframes (cf. von Stutterheim & Lambert 2005).\n\nBased on cont
rasts linked to temporal reference in the discussed languages\, the\nmain
question addressed in my study is how highly advanced L2 speakers from\nty
pologically unrelated L1s go about when construing events in English as se
cond\nlanguage. Two experiments were designed to detect whether speakers w
ho have\nmastered the formal devices for temporal reference in L2 (a) stil
l rely on principles of\ntemporal information structure typical of their L
1s\; or (b) adopt target-like strategies\nfor organising temporality in di
scourse alongside learning a new language\; or (c)\nemploy other technique
