DESCRIPTION:This talk highlights the characteristics of engineering softwa
re for mobile devices. The differences compared to traditional approaches
for web or desktop software are discussed. A model for mobile software eng
ineering is proposed and various best-practices together with case studies
from real-world projects are presented. Essential software engineering te
chniques for mobile such as experience prototyping\, in-context requiremen
ts gathering and testing\, or UI/UIX design are explained using examples a
nd tools.\n\nThis talk is based on the article “Why Software Engineering
for Mobile Applications is Different” published at the 8th Internationa
l Conference on Pervasive Computing in 2010.\n\nBio\n\nDr Manfred Bortensc
hlager is engineering manager at the Samsung Electronics Research Institut
e in Staines\, UK. As platform evangelist lead he coordinates the activiti
es to position and promote Samsung’s new mobile phone platform and ecosy
stem bada within the relevant developer communities. These activities comp
rise R&D projects\, creating training material such as demo code\, tutoria
ls\, blog posts\, videos or the recently published “Introduction to bada
” book\, and organising and presenting at events such as developer days.
\nBefore that\, Dr Manfred Bortenschlager has been working in applied rese
arch of mobile and location based services at Salzburg Research\, an Austr
ian research organisation for over 7 years. His main research was in the d
omain of Pervasive Computing where he focussed on Coordination in Pervasiv
e Environments. He could successfully establish and run a scientific works
hop related to that topic at the IEEE WETICE series. He was leading severa
l national and international research projects. He was responsible site ma
nager for Salzburg Research in the EU STREP research project WORKPAD\, wit
h a duration of 3 years and a consortium of 8 international partners. He p
ublished 40 scientific papers.\nDr Bortenschlager holds a PhD in Computer
Science and a MSc in Telecommunications Engineering.\n\nContact:\nManfred
