DESCRIPTION:Populations are ageing - in 2007\, the number of pensioners ou
tnumbered\nchildren for the first time in UK history - but the healthcare
system is not\ndesigned to cope with caring for this ageing population. Th
e market for in\nhome monitoring devices is growing but these devices do n
ot necessarily take\ninto account informal carers who are involved in the
daily lives of those\nthey care for. We set out to explore how carers can
be assisted by new\ntechnologies that are designed to help them in their e
veryday lives. We met\nwith carers in their homes to discuss their day to
day lives. Carers present\ndifferent circumstances\; from a mother caring
for her heavily disabled\nchild\, to a husband looking after his wife with
a long term condition\, to a\ndaughter caring for her elderly parents. A
nd they all have a story to tell.\nWe encountered tears\, laughter\, and a
deep sense of determination to do the\nbest for the person they care for.
We discussed their encounters with the\nhealthcare system and the profess
ionals within it\, the tools and technology\nthey use\, their experiences
and the impact caring has had on their lives. We\nidentified a set of emer
ging themes and used these to generate new\nopportunities for products and
services that can support carers in their\ndaily life.\n\n\n--\nDr. Rache
l Jones has over 20 years experience in creating breakthrough\ndigital tec
hnologies. Rachel founded Instrata in 2001 with the aim of\nhelping organi
zations to evolve services and create new opportunities that\ndeliver grea

tered interactive design. It has an excellent track record\nacross a varie
ty of industries\, building a significant reputation for our\nexpertise in
