SUMMARY:Microswimmers\, nanoswimmers and microfluidic mixers: The role of
hydrodynamic interactions and fluctuations - Ramin Golestanian (University

DESCRIPTION:The directed propulsion of small scale objects in water is pro
blematic because of the combination of low Reynolds number and strong ther
mal fluctuations at these length scales. I introduce simple prototypes of
model low Reynolds number swimmers and examine their physical properties w
ith and without fluctuations. I also report on a number of recent experime
ntal realizations of such devices.\nFinally\, I discuss the collective beh
avior of an array of model microfluidic pumps\, and examine dynamical phen
omena such as synchronization and (low Reynolds number) turbulent mixing\,
  with and without fluctuations.\n
