DESCRIPTION:The physical layer of a wireless communication system is gener
ally considered to apply only to individual links within a wireless networ
 k. Physical Layer Network Coding (PLNC)\, aka Wireless Network Coding\, i
n effect extends the physical layer across a wireless \nnetwork: we may a
lso call it "the network-aware physical layer". \nLike Network Coding\,
it allows coding techniques to be appllied at network nodes\, rather than
simple switching\, but in contrast it does not require data to be transmi
tted over separate channels\, but exploits the broadcast character of wire
less networks to combine data streams travelling by different routes throu
gh the network. The talk will introduce the basic ideas of PLNC using som
e simple examples\, and then consider its application to next generation\,
ultra high capacity density\, wireless broadband networks.\n
