DESCRIPTION:We consider the Relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system of equation
 s which\ndescribes the evolution of a collisionless relativistic plasma. W
 e show that under rather general conditions\, one can test for linear inst
 ability by checking the spectral properties of Schroedinger-type operators
  that act only on the spatial variable\, not the full phase space. This ex
 tends previous results that show linear and nonlinear stability and instab
 ility in more restrictive settings.\n
