SUMMARY:Why soil mechanics matters in FE – geotechnical analysis of a de
ep excavation - Brian Simpson\, Arup Fellow\, ARUP

DESCRIPTION:Finite element modelling is currently used fairly routinely in
geotechnical design\, often based on relatively simple soil mechanics lea
rnt at undergraduate level\, or just beyond. The talk will recount a situ
ation in which basic concepts interacted in an unexpected way\, leading to
misconceptions about commercially available FE programs. A key aspect\,
routinely overlooked\, proved to be the dilational behaviour of the ground
\, and of the FE programs.\n\n
