DESCRIPTION:The Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer (MROI) is the m
ost\nambitious optical interferometer project in the world today. First\nf
unded in 2000\, the project has gained significant momentum in the\nlast f
ew years and is anticipating first light and first fringes in\nduring the
next few. We have recently completed the first telescope\,\nand installed
several telescope pads outside and the first vacuum\ndelay pipe inside th
e beam combining facilities. Delivery and\ninitial operation of telescope
one and the first delay line trolley is\nscheduled for later this year. Wh
en completed\, MROI will include 10\nmovable telescopes operating over 7.5
to 340m baselines and wavelengths\n(0.6-2.4 microns) that will allow astr
onomers to produce sub-milliarcsecond\nimages of a large variety of astrop
hysical targets. I will present\nour overall completed design and recent
progress\, our timeline to first\nlight and first fringes\, and the signif
icant technical and scientific\nmilestones anticipated over the next few y
ears as we enter the\ncommissioning phase.
