 port was appointed Director of the Wellcome Trust in June 2003. Before joi
 ning the Trust he was Professor of Medicine and Head of the Division of Me
 dicine at Imperial College London. The Wellcome Trust played a leading rol
 e in the Human Genome Project – sequencing around one-third of the genom
 e – and remains one of the world’s foremost genomics research centres.
  The availability of the complete genomic sequence has transformed the pra
 ctice of biology and our ability to look at how genes function in health a
 nd disease. It has enabled groundbreaking science\, such as the work of th
 e Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium in identifying many new genetic f
 actors associated with common diseases. \n
