DESCRIPTION:I will review some of the recent exciting progress in our know
ledge of graphene\, a remarkable monolayer allotrope of carbon which promi
ses to have important technological applications\, with particular focus o
n its electronic properties. Next I will introduce an effective 2+1d relat
ivistic field theory description\, taking account of inter-electron intera
ctions\, and argue that the low-energy behaviour of the charge carriers ma
y be described by a quantum critical point. I will present results of nume
rical Monte Carlo simulations to show that the QCP may be relevant for phy
 sical graphene.
