DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:* This paper will examine how urban design might be
defined\, and how the current confusion of architectural and elemental app
roaches might be reformed as theorists develop the\ncapacity to look direc
tly at relationships between people and the city. Given that our relations
hips with built environments have a specific reality\, the paper will expl
ore how that reality might be\nunderstood in terms of configurations of ur
ban space and fabric\, and associated human functions relating to simple u
se\, perception\, and the conceptual responses through which we distil\nme
aning.\n\n*Biography:* Patrick Malone holds degrees in Architecture (Archi
tectural Association)\, Urban Studies (University of Sussex) and a Ph.D. f
rom the Department of Geography\, Trinity College Dublin. He has worked as
an architect\, and as an academic in Architecture and Urban Design. He wa
s director of a masters course in Urban\nDesign at the University of Manch
ester\, and currently runs Arcitalia\, a company dedicated to the renovati
