DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:* Winston Churchill’s observation that “we make
our buildings\; then they make us” suggests that part of our subjectivit
y lies in the environment we inhabit. This implies that when we\nare makin
g buildings we are not just making objects but subjects as well. When arch
itecture is conceived of in these terms an entire set of possibilities ope
ns up with the questions: who are we\, and who do we want to become? For t
he last decade\, my work has been to follow this line of inquiry through a
rchitectural exhibitions in artistic contexts. I will present a selection
of works that explore subjectivity in all its complexity.\n\n*Biography:*
Alex Schweder La’s projects have been exhibited internationally includin
g the Netherlands Institute of Architecture\, Henry Urbach Architecture in
New York\, The Sculpture Center in New York\, the San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art\, and Magnus Muller in Berlin. He is the recipient of numerous
awards including a Rome\nPrize fellowship in Architecture and a Pollock-K
rasner award. Schweder La holds a masters degree in architecture from Prin
ceton University and teaches at the Southern California Institute of Archi
 tecture in Los Angeles.
